Meet the Horses
Each horse is carefully selected for their temperament and ability to support your unique healing journey.

Apollo
Apollo is the horse that started it all. Bought from a family who had rescued him from a rough situation where he had been "cowboy broke", Apollo came to use very reactive and fearful of humans. Through years of gentle guidance and natural horsemanship techniques, Apollo is now one of the favorite horses at the ranch for jumping, barrel racing, and hugs. He is especially sensitive to reading humans nonverbal cues, which makes him especially adapt for use with counseling sessions.Â
Nugget
Nugget joined us at age 15 after spending much of his life as a trail horse. Now 23 years old, he proves that age is just a number! As the leader of the herd, Nugget keeps everyone in line and helps everything run smoothly. While kind, loving, and dependable, he leads both his equine and human herd with quiet confidence and grace. Give him a scratch in his favorite spot, and you'll have a loyal friend for life.
Roach
Roach is part of our program through our partnership with Drage Second Chance Ranch. Now serving primarily as a lesson horse, Roach was donated to the ranch after a successful career as a reining horse. While he may move a little slower these days, his gentle nature and kind spirit leave a lasting impression on everyone he meets. This sweet old gentleman has a remarkable ability to earn the trust of even the most hesitant individuals, making him a favorite among riders and visitors alike.

The Equine Approach
Horses are prey animals who have survived for millennia by accurately reading their environment. They respond not to words, but to presence—subtle shifts in body language, emotional state, and nervous system regulation. In their company, emotional regulation cannot easily be performed or concealed. Horses cannot be persuaded or manipulated. They do not reward performance or punish authenticity; they simply respond to what is occurring in the moment.

Because of this responsiveness, important emotional information often becomes accessible—to the individual and to the counselor observing the interaction. The horse’s behavior provides real‑time data about boundaries, safety, connection, and regulation, grounded in the present moment rather than narrative alone.

Research suggests that equine‑assisted interventions can support reductions in trauma‑related symptoms, anxiety, and depression, often complementing or accelerating progress when compared with traditional office‑based approaches. This is not because horses are magical, but because they naturally create conditions essential for healing: embodied awareness, honest engagement, and opportunities for regulation within a safe, relational context. Through this process, clients gain insight and skills that are transferable beyond the arena and into daily life.

The Unique Bond Between Humans and Horses
We believe that the therapeutic connection between a human and a horse is one of the most profound forms of healing. Through this unique bond, we create a space where vulnerability is met with unconditional trust, allowing for deep emotional safety and transformative growth.
